Gigaku mask

Gigaku is a dance from China which blew over to Japan in the 7th Century. Gigaku dances were given for specific Buddhistic ceremonies or receiving foreign delegations.

Gigaku masks represent various personages.

The here painted mask is a type ‘Suikojū’ (drunk barbarian) which closes the procession.
